In this research I personally led at Magic Leap, I wanted to explore the potential of AR to expand our sense of perception.

First, I tried to the experiment without a Magic Leap 2. The goal was to allow users to recognize objects in close proximity to their left or right field of view with patterns on both the left and right arms respectively.

Second, I moved onto to using the data from the depth sensor of Magic Leap 2, to design an experiment where users can determine the proximity of objects and volumes near them with matching patterns on their arms.

Proximity Detection

Object recognition ︎︎︎

By allowing participants to move closer to objects in their scene and receive vibrations on both the left and right hand—delivered sequentially across a 2×5 grid corresponding to the objects detected in their left and right field of view—they can begin to identify and understand what is present in their surroundings.

Using the Magic Leap 2’s depth sensor, here participants are presented with vibrations in both their left and right hands that match the approximate outline of their surroundings.
